Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty): Restoring Youthful Eyes and Improving Vision

Do you notice your eyes looking tired and half-open? Do you notice your field of vision is narrowing? If so, you could benefit from an eyelid surgery, also known as blepharoplasty. Your plastic surgeon can tell you more.

What You Need To Know About Eyelid Surgery

Eyelid surgery removes excess fat and skin from the eyelids and raises the eyelids. It’s a procedure performed by a skilled plastic surgeon to make eyes appear larger and more open.

There are both medical and cosmetic reasons to have eyelid surgery. A condition known as ptosis, or “sleepy eye” is the most common medical reason to have eyelid surgery. Ptosis can cause your field of vision to narrow, so you don’t see as well. Eyelid surgery can:

  • Help to restore your field of vision
  • Enhance your peripheral vision.

When eyelid surgery is performed for medical reasons, there is a good chance medical insurance will pay for part of the procedure.

Many people choose eyelid surgery for cosmetic reasons because eyelid surgery can:

  • Make eyes appear more open
  • Make eyes appear wider
  • Make eyes appear younger
  • Change the appearance of the eyes

During eyelid surgery, the plastic surgeon will remove excess fat and skin from the eyelids. The plastic surgeon may also shorten the levator muscle which raises the eyelids. This helps to lift the eyelids.

After your eyelid surgery, it's common to experience some swelling and bruising of the eyelid and the surrounding tissue for the first one to three weeks after your surgery. You may be able to go back to work and go out ten days to two weeks after your procedure.

You may also want to consider other procedures to be done at the same time as the eyelid lift. A brow lift can also be done to raise the brows, smooth out fine lines and wrinkles on your forehead, and give you a younger-looking upper face.
